I was very proud of the SPCA Richmond SPAS when I had the privilege of serving , but it is only recently that I appreciated legacy of leadership and courageous commitment of our organization since its founding in 1891. As we were about to celebrate our 20th anniversary this year, our research on the remarkable saga of the Richmond SPAS revealed a fascinating human history of domestic Richmond outstanding leadership for SPCA Richmond many decades.
Shortly after the Civil War , people have become increasingly concerned about the way animals , especially horses, have been seriously abused. This growing sense of compassion for the suffering of animals was the catalyst for human movement and late 19th century , organizations across the country SPCA Richmond began to be formed for the protection of animals.
Most of them , if it is not connected in any way , use the " Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" , as its name with the identifier of the city at the beginning . This has led to the mistaken belief that many organizations with this name are somehow related or connected as chapters of a parent entity SPCA Richmond, which are not and have never been.
